Launching the first Derrington Local Food Festival in September 2009
Derrington pioneers low-carbon project
Derrington is on the path to becoming the first low-carbon community in Stafford Borough, thanks to funding secured through the Borough Council. This pioneering community project will put Derrington at the forefront of the fight to reduce carbon emissions.
Derrington Village Hall
The community-led project project is being run as part of Stafford Borough Council's Climate Change and Sustainable Development Programme, and focuses on people and households in around the village. Everyone can play their part in reducing carbon emissions, and save money at the same time. See 'FAQs - More About Way Ahead!' for the full story.

Members of the Way Ahead steering group meeting at the Red Lion to discuss the project
The 'Way Ahead' questionnaire was delivered to all households, to find out what activities, projects or issues interest or concern you. Over 50 households have received a free Energy Efficiency Survey to identify energy and cost savings. And Jules of Beat the Cold wants to do even more. But time is running out for the free surveys. Books yours now! Click here for more information.
Over 100 people attended the Launch event held in Derrington Village Hall on Saturday 30th May. There was a real buzz of interest as visitors received tips from the experts on reducing waste, making better compost or cutting energy bills. A steady stream of folk took up the offer of free bike safety checks, and younger visitors got their faces painted or made giant butterflies and dragonflies. And everyone was grateful to the members of Derrington WI, who rustled up delicious cakes, rolls and drinks.
Plentiful food for thought was supplied by Richard Davies of Marches Energy Agency, who presented an inspirational evening on 14 July. Nearly 40 people listened intently as he outlined the threats posed by global warming, and the challenges we all face in changing to a low-carbon economy.
The Local Food Festival on 12 September brought local farmers and growers face to face with potential new customers in the village. It highlighted the benefits of buying food locally, and the environmental cost of food imports. The climax was a Local Food Auction, which raised nearly £100 for Village Hall funds.
Villagers turned out in force to celebrate the first anniversary of the project, by holding a Tea Dance and Buffet at the Village Hall on 27 March 2010. Music was provided by Jazzmatazz, and a raffle raised about £100 for the Village Hall Energy Project.

Derrington - Way Ahead! is supported by Stafford Borough Council as part of its programme to tackle climate change and improve quality of life for present and future generations through sustainable development. It is funded through 'Learning to Deliver' and from the Staffordshire Aggregates Levy Grant Scheme, to whom we are grateful for support.
